‘Midsomer Murders’ has proved enormously popular and is now well established as one of the most enduring productions on ITV’s schedules. Designing the early series of this successful show was a great challenge, not least because each episode required the recreation of the “quintessentially English” village complete with perfectly appointed cottages furnished traditionally with old styles and abundant antiques. To keep reproducing this “England that time forgot” required considerable design ‘slight of hand’. Success therefore meant seamlessly creating a never-ending series of apparently distinct rural idylls. Thus what appears to be the genuine article is actually a highly orchestrated façade
